Annoying Problem

Hey, I just joined but I've been to all different kinds of forums before so I know the rules. I have an annoying (and sorta big) problem with CS 1.6. I can only play a few rounds (if I get lucky) before I get taken back to the menu screen. It doesn't even tell me that I've been banned/kicked/disconnect; all it does is take me back to the menu screen. Mad

I have X-Fire, Steam, and CS 1.6. My friend is using my CD key so I'm using his account. This problem is really beginning to annoy me since their is no point in me having the game on my PC if I can't play it. Can anyone help me?? Question

Humm...

Is this version of CS from a retail-bought pack with a few games or just CS?
Is this a problem affecting only 'secure' servers?
Does this effect any steam game other than CS?
By menu do you mean the CS or steam menu? Are you logged out of steam or anything when this happens?

1. I bought my game and it only came with CS 1.5 (which, as I mentioned earlier, I upgraded to 1.6 through Steam)
2. As far as I know, it is only affecting secure servers
3. I only have CS on Steam
4. It takes me to the Steam menu and no, I'm not logged out of anything.

have you checked the console after you got disconnected to the main screen? my guess would be your friend logging on at the same time as you

pretty damn hard.... try it out phone him up... lol anything in console btw? console solves every problem i have ever had with any game ever.

Ahh, the console... Kinda depends on your config, but it's defaulted to either tidle (~ and #) or that key just under 'Esc' (` and ¬).

Press that when you get disconnected, and tell us what you see, if you can't get the console by doing this, it's probably because it's been turned off... Say if this doesn't work and I'll explain how to activate it.

This all kinda depends on how your setup is configured atm, so bear with me and I'll try to explain. Don't be afraid of the red text Wink

Find your cs folder which is:
Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\<STEAM username>\counter-strike\cstrike

Find the config.cfg file which is in that cstrike folder and open it up with notepad. It should be a long list of functions/commands, the CS client reads from this when you log into the game. Hit ctrl-f (find and replace), and search for console

When I do this, it highlights the following (in red):

bind "~" "toggleconsole"
bind "`" "toggleconsole"
(The keys I have bound to open the console).

And lastly:
console "1"
(This function allows you to activate and disable the console, why it exists is anybody's guess Rolling Eyes

)

So either:

The console command is there and set to "1", but no keys are assigned (binded) to open it.
The console command is set to "0" or not there, but binds are there and correct.
Neither the console command or binds are there and correct.

In whichever case, make sure these red bits are in that config file somewhere (doesn't really matter where):

console 1
bind "`" "toggleconsole"
bind "~" "toggleconsole" (you may as well have both).

Having done this... I damn well hope you can open the console when you press ` (¬) or ~ (#) Very Happy

If not, don't worry! There is another way ^^ but it takes even more effort! THEN, we can hopefully find out why you get disconnected!!

Humm, well I've looked about on various forums and stuff (I didn't have a clue tbh Smile

), came up with a few posibilities and it's not just a problem with CS...

1. Nice and simply: try logging out, then logging in manually by typing in your username and password.

2. Can you list exactly what's in your config.cfg file. I know it'll take up some space but it might help us to help you...

3. If those don't help me, the solution is probably more complicated ( Sad

)... And I wud need answers first (plz check if your not sure Wink

this bit's kinda important if 1. and 2. don't give any clues):

a) Are you on a network?
b) Have you installed some piece of hardware or software lately?
c) What is your ISP?
d) Changed, altered or had problems with your ISP lately?
e) Have you got a firewall?
f) Have you got a router? If so:
When was the last time you reset your router?
When was the last time you updated your router's 'firmware'?

1. And I do log in manually. I have it set to log me on automatically so I don't have to type in his password everytime since I don't remember his very well. But, I always log onto Steam before I enter a server.

3. a) I am on a network (I think). I'm connected to my dads computer which is really old and slow. I'm connected to the internet via Cox, just to let you know.

b) The only thing I have installed lately is Steam, X-Fire, and CS 1.5 but my Yahoo Anti-Spy shows that I have some Adware called Hot Bar. I don't think this is true since my Spybot- Search & Destroy or Adaware programs show nothing about it, nor does my Anti-Virus and they tend to be more accurate.

d) As far as I know, my parents haven't changed or altered our ISP. We haven't had any problems with it either.

e) Yes but I'm pretty sure that I had it unblock CS and all it's components. I'll check.

f) I don't know if I have a router or not. How do I check??

Don't worry about asking questions since I will have some of my own. I'm mildly good with computers. Somethings I understand, others I don't, so I'll be asking quite a few of questions too. Wink
